Linz starter Danielle Collins makes furious final appearance at the Australian Open

Congratulations to Danielle Collins on finals at the Australian Open! The 28-year-old American, who was in the semi-final at the Upper Austria Ladies Linz almost three months ago, showed a furious tournament performance in Melbourne. She was defeated in the final by Australia’s top-ranked Ashleigh Barty 3:6, 6:7 (2:7). In the second set she even led 5-1.

Known for her willpower on and next to the square, Collins has had a difficult year 2021. The reason was an endometriosis disorder, about which she speaks very openly. Last April, a tennis ball-sized cyst was removed from her ovaries and other tissue on her bladder and intestine.

“Danielle’s story moved me a lot, and I give her great success in Australia a lot. She is an incredibly strong personality”, said Linz Tournament Director Sandra Reichel. Collins, nicknamed “Danimal” because of her fighting spirit, received $1. 575 million (around €990,000) in prize money for her first Grand Slam tournament. In addition, the woman from Florida will be placed in the top ten of the world rankings for the first time in her career. In the course of the tournament she had won over Iga Swiatek (Poland), Alizé Cornet (France) and Elise Mertens (Belgium).

In Upper Austria last November, Collins had to retire in the preliminary round due to a shoulder injury against future tournament winner Alison Riske (USA) after the first set (5:7). During the tournament week in Linz, she took part in a special “flour photo shoot” of our sponsor Backaldrin in the “Wunderkammer des Bretes” together with Simona Halep.
